As their name implies, intense pulsed light photofacials rely on light to help you correct cosmetic issues like fine lines and wrinkles. Treatment can provide both men and women with improved skin tone and texture as well as a more vibrant appearance.
How do Intense Pulse Light photofacials work?
Photofacials use highly-focused beams of broad-spectrum light to target the lower layers of the skin. This removes damaged skin while promoting the growth of collagen, one of the building blocks of healthy, toned skin. As it penetrates deep beneath the skin's surface, it also promotes the development of collagen, a naturally occurring substance that helps skin look and feel firmer, as well as being more resilient. The results of the procedure will become more apparent during the weeks following treatment as natural collagen production increases.
Who is a candidate for this procedure?
Men and women with uneven skin tones, sun-damaged skin, freckles or other discolorations, large pores or mild to moderate wrinkles may be good candidates for photofacial treatments. The best candidates are those with lighter skin tones and those with skin that still retains some elasticity. People with darker skin or deeply tanned skin may not have the best results. Your doctor will be able to determine if IPL™ therapy is a good choice for attaining your cosmetic goals. As with any cosmetic procedure, it's also important to have realistic expectations, so talk to your doctor or dermatologist about the results you're hoping to achieve.
What's involved in having an IPL™ treatment?
Prior to your treatment, a cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area to help improve comfort and provide lubrication for the handpiece. During your procedure, the hand piece will be moved across the treatment area, emitting pulses of bright light to the skin. You may feel warmth or a mild stinging sensation as the light penetrates your skin to remove damaged areas. Most treatments take less than an hour - sometimes just 10 or 15 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Afterward, you may be provided a cool compress to sooth the skin.
What are the advantages of IPL™ photofacials?
Intense Pulse Light treatments involve minor discomfort, if any, and no recovery time, making them a good choice for people with busy schedules. Unlike laser-based procedures, IPL does not remove the skin's tissues, which is part of what makes the recovery process so simple and easy.
IPL skin rejuvenation can be a good choice for:
- Improving skin texture
- Reducing or eliminating discoloration or uneven tone
- Reducing pore size
- Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reducing the appearance of rosacea
Will I need a series of follow-up appointments?
Although a single treatment can provide an improvement in skin's tone and texture, to get the best results, most patients need multiple treatments. With each treatment, a different layer of the skin can be treated to help address different skin issues or problems - for instance, uneven tone and rough texture. In most cases, a series of five treatments spaced about three weeks apart are ideal for achieving maximum results.
