Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliating procedure offered at Metropolitan Dermatology that can help reduce or eliminate the fine lines and wrinkles that can make you appear older than you are and older than you feel. The technique is ideal for rejuvenating your skin's tone and texture, giving you a fresher, restored look complemented by a healthy glow. It's also gentle enough to be used with all skin colors and skin types.
How does this exfoliating treatment work?
Our diamond tipped Microdermabrasion device gently abrade and exfoliate the skin's top layer and can be used anywhere on the face. This system is coupled with a handheld suction device that vacuums the crystals and skin fragments away. The suction also helps remove oil and unclog pores, leaving skin feeling cleaner and smoother and looking more refreshed.
Who is a candidate for this procedure?
This non-surgical approach is a great option for most patients with minor skin conditions or cosmetic issues who do not have active skin diseases or infections. Patients with active acne, severe rosacea, dermatitis or eczema are generally not good candidates. If you have one of these conditions, our dermatologist can help you find a treatment that's right for you. Because it's a mild treatment, microdermabrasion will not correct deep lines, wrinkles or creases, nor will it help improve sagging skin. Again, your doctor can provide guidance for the best treatments for managing those issues.
What's involved in this skin freshening diamond tip technique?
Microdermabrasion uses a handheld device with a diamond tip to both emit the abrading crystals and vacuum them up. During your treatment, your clinician will place the device against your skin, moving the device slowly across the treatment area to allow the crystals to do their job. Most sessions take from 30 to 60 minutes, which has earned the procedure the nickname of the "lunchtime facial."
What are the advantages of Microdermabrasion?
This skin rejuvenation treatment uses no chemicals, which makes it an ideal choice for people with extremely sensitive skin or those who cannot otherwise tolerate chemical peels. Performed comfortably in our dermatologist's office, the procedure can be used to:
- Reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduce the appearance of acne scars
- Reduce discoloration or uneven skin tone
- Unclog pores
- Improve texture and appearance of skin
In addition, the skin-freshening technique can help stimulate the production of the skin's natural collagen to help skin appear firmer, plumper and more resilient.
Will I need follow-up treatments?
Microdermabrasion is a relatively gentle treatment to help improve the texture, tone and appearance of skin, so gentle in fact that to gain the most benefits, a series of treatments are typically recommended. Multiple treatments help encourage the growth of new, healthy skin cells to eventually promote the development of thicker layers of rejuvenated skin, as well as promote the production of collagen and elastin. Ideally, 5 to 12 treatments are recommended, depending upon your skin type, the area of skin that needs to be addressed and the results you are seeking. Treatments are typically spaced a couple weeks apart to allow time for proper healing.
