The selfie trend has many women and men looking for ways to improve their photogenic qualities. Metropolitan Dermatology can help.

You see them all day long via sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Chances are you’ve posted a few, yourself. In fact, the ever growing “selfie” trend has so saturated the social media sites that it’s actually boosting demand in cosmetic procedures, particularly among the under-30 set, researchers say.

Results of a newly released study by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery show that a third of the 2,700 plastic surgeons surveyed saw an increase in requests for procedures by patients who admitted to being self-conscious of their looks in social media photos. Throughout 2013, the selfie trend led to a 10-percent increase in rhinoplasty, a 7-percent boost in hair transplants and 6-percent rise in eyelid surgery procedures.

“Social platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and the iPhone app Selfie.im, which are solely image based, force patients to hold a microscope up to their own image and often look at it with a more self-critical eye than ever before,” said AAFPRS President Edward Farrior, MD. “These images are often the first impressions young people put out there to prospective friends, romantic interests and employers and our patients want to put their best face forward.”

Undergoing an invasive and costly surgical procedure simply to get a better profile picture is a bit much for most. And, it’s unnecessary. There are multiple non-invasive or minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures that can help you put your best face forward whether online or out on the town. Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and IPL photofacials all help to correct and improve your skin, lending a smoother, brighter, healthier and more youthful look.

Metropolitan Dermatology can conduct a thorough skin analysis and help you determine which of these cosmetic procedures is right for your particular skincare needs and desired results.
